Website CDN Breakdowns: Finding the Real Bottleneck

Website CDN Breakdowns: Finding the Real Bottleneck

ANGA COM (Cologne)

May 20, 2026 | Werner Robitza

Talk
Many ISPs and Telcos want to find the bottlenecks that lead to problematic customer experience while browsing the web on their network. In a short demo, Werner walks through a detailed CDN breakdown workflow in Surfmeter for popular websites. The key idea is simple: page-load summaries alone often do not tell you where a problem really sits. To understand that, you need to break requests down by domain (CDN) and timing behavior.

QoE Matters – How Application-Level Monitoring Pinpoints Network Issues

DENOG (Essen)

Talk
Network operations engineers maintain the backbone of our digital experiences, ensuring robust connectivity and managing complex routing. Yet, even with great network health, where are the current limits of today’s routing technology? What does it mean when your manager calls you and says “Our customers can’t watch Netflix!”? Can we measure how the end users experience the high variety of OTT-services, beyond classical speedtests? In this talk, we will investigate real-world scenarios where network issues, even seemingly minor ones, impacted video QoE.

Detect Network Issues with Application QoE Measurements

Detect Network Issues with Application QoE Measurements

NetworkX (Paris)

Oct 15, 2025 | Werner Robitza

Talk
Why do customers complain about video buffering and slow startup times, even when your network speed tests look perfect? This talk from Network X in Paris explores the critical gap between technical network performance (Quality of Service – QoS) and actual user happiness (Quality of Experience – QoE). Werner Robitza, CEO of AVEQ, demonstrates why traditional metrics like throughput, latency and reliability aren't enough to guarantee a good streaming experience, and explains that real-world QoE is complex, non-linear, and depends heavily on the specific service being used.

Video Quality Models for Adaptive Streaming

Video Quality Models for Adaptive Streaming

Online

Oct 7, 2021 | Werner Robitza

Talk
A quick, 3-minute overview of two ITU-T-standardized models for calculating the quality of HTTP Adaptive Streaming. ITU-T Rec. P.1203 is the first model of its kind to measure the impact of initial loading delay, stalling and quality fluctuations over time. P.1204.3 is a bitstream-based metric that requires no access to the video source and achieves over 0.9 correlation against human ratings – comparable to or better than VMAF. Reference implementations are available on GitHub.
